Govt urged to allocate state-owned land for organic farming
NEWS WIREMay 18, 2026Newspaper, Business
LAHORE - Najam Mazari, head of a research organization working on organic food and products, has urged the federal and provincial governments to allocate state-owned land for organic farming, saying that effective policymaking and private sector participation could help Pakistan emerge as a major player in global organic agricultural exports. In a statement issued on Sunday, Mazari said organic farming is not only environmentally friendly but also witnessing rapidly growing demand in international markets. He called on both federal and provincial governments to earmark special funds in the upcoming fiscal year’s budget to promote organic farming across the country. He stressed that farmers should be provided with modern training, facilities, and financial assistance to enable them to produce organic products that meet international standards. Mazari also demanded that the federal government include organic food products in Pakistan’s export priority list. He emphasized the need to establish internationally recognized certification systems and modern laboratory facilities so that Pakistani organic products could be introduced in global markets with credibility and confidence.llll)ll(())
He said such initiatives would create new employment opportunities, strengthen the agricultural economy, and increase the country’s foreign exchange earnings.
The organic farming expert further proposed the establishment of dedicated organic farming zones in every province to encourage advanced agricultural research and the adoption of modern technologies.
He also called for the introduction of special programs aimed at attracting young people to the organic farming sector, adding that such measures would boost economic activity in rural areas and directly benefit small-scale farmers.
Mazari maintained that if the plan is implemented seriously and consistently, Pakistan has the potential to become a leading regional hub for organic food exports.
